Freedom Summer and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is an interactive learning module based on the Civil Rights Movement and civil rights legislation.

In Freedom Summer...

  • Players discover how events of the Civil Rights Movement and concurrent events in Congress impacted each other and the role that both Congress and individuals play in representative democracy.
  • Players are presented with a series of 20 historic events and are required to predict the consequences of each event.
  •  Players learn about the individuals and officials that played pivotal roles in the Civil Rights Movement and the contentious Congressional debate.

GAME INSTRUCTIONS

Click the BEGIN button to play the INTRODUCTION. The right and left arrows will advance the narration forward and backward. The INTRODUCTION can be skipped by clicking the "hidden" button in the upper-right corner.

After the INTRODUCTION, you will see a thumbnail image of an historic event. Clicking on the image will present background information and a multiple-choice question about the event. Your challenge is to predict the response to the historic event. You can EXPLORE FURTHER to get more background before making your selection.

Once you have selected the CORRECT response, drag the image to the BLUE DOT on the timeline. This will present the next historic event. After you complete all 20 events, the CONCLUSION will play.

Once you have started the game, you can always return to the beginning by selecting the MAIN tab. If you stop before completing the game, you can select CONTINUE from the menu page to continue where you left off.

You can explore the BIOGRAPHIES, GALLERY, or GLOSSARY at any time.

Q. I clicked on the "download" button and nothing happens.

A. The Freedom Summer folder is downloaded to your download folder or another place that you may have designated on your computer.

Q. I've answered a question correctly, but I do not see the next event.

A. Clicking the red X will close the "correct" screen and return to the "time-line" screen. The image must be dragged to the BLUE DOT to reveal the next event.
