Notable Members of Congress

 

General Overview

In this module you will be introduced to Members of Congress who have made significant contributions to the quality of life in America . More than 11,000 legislators have served in Congress, some of whom have gone on to be President. Some had quite interesting careers before becoming Members. Others, either by changing the system or working skillfully within it, were able to make lasting positive changes to the lives of all Americans. This module provides you with a broad overview of the dedicated Americans who have served the country since its founding. View the "how to" document.

Lessons and Assessments

The lessons listed below are self-contained. You may complete them in any order you wish.

 

Life before Congress (Grades 5 – 8)

Students will learn about the interesting backgrounds of Members of Congress and discuss the background of their own representative or senator.

 

Presidential Medal of Freedom (Grades 5 – 8)

In this lesson students will learn what the Presidential Medal of Freedom is and find out who is eligible to receive this honor. Students will then create their own library of pamphlets that describe the lives of two recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

 

Members of Congress Who Became President (Grades 5 – 8)

In this lesson students will research Members of Congress who became President of the United States and give an oral presentation about one Member of Congress who became President.

 

How to Become a Member of Congress (Grades 9 – 12)

Students will learn about the interesting backgrounds of Members of Congress and discuss the requirements for becoming a Member of Congress.

 

Members of Congress Who Have Made a Significant Contribution (Grades 9 – 12)

In this lesson students will read about laws that have benefited the nation in a variety of ways. Students will choose one Member of Congress and write about any significant laws he or she helped to pass.

 

Ethics in Congress (Grades 9 – 12)

In this lesson students will learn about Members of Congress who have engaged in misconduct and discuss how Members of Congress can be disciplined.

 

Rubric: This section contains performance assessment rubrics for students who have completed all of the lessons in the Civic Participation Module.  These rubrics may be saved and used "as-is," or you can modify the rubrics in any way that is appropriate for your students.
